What To Do in the First 5 Minutes of an Emergency

When an emergency happens, the first five minutes are the most critical. Your actions can mean the difference between recovery and tragedy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to staying calm and effective.

1. Check the Scene for Safety

Before you rush in, make sure it’s safe. Look for hazards like traffic, fire, or electrical danger. You can’t help if you become a victim yourself.

2. Check for Responsiveness

Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, call for help immediately.

3. Call 911

If someone else is with you, have them call 911 while you begin CPR. If you’re alone, put your phone on speaker so the dispatcher can guide you.

4. Start CPR

Begin chest compressions right away if the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.

5. Use an AED if Available

If there’s an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) nearby, turn it on and follow the prompts. Every minute without defibrillation decreases survival chances by 7–10%.
