How to Use an AED in 3 Simple Steps

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is one of the most powerful tools in saving someone’s life during sudden cardiac arrest. Best of all? It’s designed to be simple so anyone can use it.

Step 1: Turn It On

AEDs talk you through the process. Once you open the lid or press the power button, a calm voice gives you clear, step-by-step instructions.

Step 2: Apply the Pads

Expose the person’s chest and apply the sticky pads exactly as shown in the diagrams (one pad below the right collarbone, the other on the lower left chest). The machine won’t work unless the pads are properly placed.

Step 3: Follow the Prompts

The AED will analyze the heart rhythm automatically. If a shock is advised, it will tell you to press the button — but only after confirming everyone is clear. Immediately resume CPR after the shock.

Key Point: You cannot hurt someone with an AED. It only delivers a shock if it detects a dangerous rhythm.
