First Aid Basics Everyone Should Know

Not all emergencies involve cardiac arrest — sometimes it’s an injury, a burn, or an allergic reaction. First aid training teaches you how to respond calmly and effectively until help arrives.

Control Bleeding

Apply firm, direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, maintain pressure and seek emergency help.

Treat Burns

Cool the burned area with clean, cool water for at least 10 minutes. Never use ice, butter, or ointments.

Handle Choking

Use abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) on adults and children, and back blows for infants. Every second counts.

Recognize Allergic Reactions

Watch for swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing. If the person has an epinephrine auto-injector, help them use it immediately.

Stabilize Fractures

Keep the injured area still. Don’t try to straighten the bone — wait for medical professionals to handle it.
